Walgett is located on the productive black soil plains of Northern New South Wales. Walgett is the gateway to the opal fields of Lightning Ridge, Glengarry and Grawin. Situated at the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers, it is an excellent fishing retreat. Walgett is a rich sheep, cattle and wheat-producing region. Walgett is also a stop on the Great Inland Way, a tourist route that travels 2,956 kilometres from Sydney to Cairns, through inland New South Wales. This spectacular journey weaves together a rich tapestry of wineries, World Heritage national parks and historic towns that sprang to life during the days of the gold rush. Walgett is also a stop on the Kamilaroi Highway, a tourist route that travels from Willow Tree just south of Tamworth, West all the way to Bourke via Quirindi, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Walgett and Brewarrina
